Women in Construction – Meet KC and Jamie

Having completed projects in all 50 states, Excel has become an industry leader in Cold-Formed Steel Framing Design, specializing in providing engineering, BIM consulting and prefabrication submittals to our clients in this industry. Our cold-formed framing department is comprised of engineers, designers and technicians, totaling 42 employees, 12 of which are women – and today we’d like to introduce you to two of those women…

Two of the senior members of the team are K.C. Belsma and Jamie John.

K.C. Belsma, Senior Designer I

  • Nearly 24 years with Excel
  • University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point
  • Spotlight Projects:
    • International Market Place – Honolulu, Hawaii
    • Tobin Center for the Performing Arts – San Antonio, Texas
    • IOC Casino – Girardeau, Missouri

K.C. is a Health and Fitness lover and enjoys outdoor fun including Camping, Motorcycling, ATVing, Hiking and planning for the next Adventure with her Hubby and Fur-Baby.

“As a Little Girl, I would spend hours out in the garage with my Dad.  A hammer, nails, and a block of wood kept me occupied.  I even had my own tool box!  The time spent hammering nails lead me to pursue a career in the Building Construction Industry.  As the only girl for nearly nine years at Excel, I had no problem adjusting to a Male-dominated workplace.  I was just one of the Guys.”

Jamie John, Senior Designer II

  • Nearly 9 years with Excel
  • Milwaukee School of Engineering
  • Spotlight Projects:
    • University of Arkansas Razorback Stadium Renovation – Fayetteville, Arkansas
    • Arizona State University Student Housing, Palo Verde Main – Tempe, Arizona
    • Dallas Cowboys Headquarters South Plaza Pylons – Frisco, Texas

Jamie lives for her family; above all things, she is a daughter, sister, wife and mother of two boys (three, if you include her floppy-eared, four-legged first born).  She is very detail oriented and has a passion for event planning.  There is no theme too big or event too small, whatever the occasion, Jamie loves to host a great party.

“I made up my mind as a young girl that I wanted to work in the construction industry. I have always been encouraged to set the bar high and do what it takes to meet my goals. I am proud to be part of the generation that changes the stereotypical image of an engineer.  I am not a man, I am not an introvert, I am not quiet or timid.  I am motivated, energetic, and social, and I am a woman.”

Women in Construction – The Stats

When it comes to the amount of women in the construction field, the numbers are growing! At Excel, we are proud to have female workers make up 19% of our company, which is over double the national average of 9% – and we are gaining speed! The number has been steadily increasing the past few years, as females are breaking the barriers and bringing their talent to the construction industry. We are beyond proud of our female workers, and can’t wait to watch these numbers continue to grow!

Women in Construction – Meet Kallie and Heather!

Excel Engineering, Inc. added interior design as professional service over 6 years ago.  Our objective is to provide a fully integrated building design that creates a total building experience from the exterior to the interior.  Our interior design department is led by two talented women with several years of experience, providing services that include Space Planning, Material and Finish Selections, and Furniture Specifications and Procurement.

Two of the design team members are Kallie Ogi and Heather Waltz.

Kallie Ogi, Senior Designer I

  • Over 6 years with Excel
  • University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point (Bachelors of Science – Interior Architecture/ Design)
  • University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee (Masters of Architecture)
  • Spotlight Projects:
    • Fairway Independent Mortgage Corporation – Madison, Wisconsin
    • Badger Liquor – Fond du Lac, Wisconsin
    • Alliance Laundry Systems – Ripon, Wisconsin

Kallie loves to take on professional and personal challenges.  She is dedicated to her profession but finds time to enjoy every minute with her husband and three young children.  Family vacations, big cities, and an active and healthy lifestyle are just some of her favorite things.

“Beginning as a young girl, I’ve observed the spaces that surround me searching for what is beautiful in both form and function.  It’s been a passion of mine to sketch, draw, and create.  Design is a very important part of our lives in so many ways.  Understanding this and finding solutions to problems within the built environment is what makes my work exciting every day.  As a female in a male-dominated industry, it is wonderful to have my opinion and work viewed with such respect.”

Heather Waltz, Interior Designer

  • 1 year with Excel & 10 Years of Experience
  • University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point (Bachelors of Art – Interior Architecture/Design, & Art)
  • Spotlight Projects:
    • Green Bay Packaging – Downers Grove, Illinois
    • Fond du Lac County Garage – Fond du Lac, Wisconsin
    • St. Paul Lutheran Church – Lake Mills, Wisconsin

Whether by plane, motorcycle or boat Heather enjoys traveling the world with her family.  She can’t get enough of the diverse cultures, food, architecture and especially the animals she meets along the way.

“I have always loved working on projects with my family and  friends.  When I was a child my family might not have appreciated my expertise as much as they do now, but my friends sure thought we had the best forts and doll houses around!”
